North of the Fran Via, the central avenue of Madrid, are two neighborhoods teeming with life and the panache of a revolutionary history. Chueca, as Madrid' earliest and most well-established LGBT+ neighborhood, is no stranger to revolution; the nearby area, Malasaña, is named after Manuela Malasaña, a young girl shot to death in the main square of the neighborhood during the uprising against the French in 1808. The area was also home, in the years after the death of Franco in 1975, to the La Movida movement, which celebrated life and expanded the boundaries of freedom and the permissible.
The two neighborhoods share many similarities, but while Cheuca has become the heart of nightlife and shopping in Madrid, Malasaña has preserved much of its alternative and artistic roots, expressed by the street art that is visible at every corner. Both neighborhoods have been featured as the backdrop for many of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's films.
